commercetools started the development of its commerce platform at the end of 2010 with the financial support of the Berlin IBB Profit programm and various early stage investors. In 2011 they released a vision paper outlining the first documented ideas of a headless commerce platform. It launched the product in April 2013 at the Exceed Conference under the project name „SPHERE.IO“ which later was renamed to the commercetools platform. commercetools today is listed by Gartner, Forrester and IDC as a globally leading vendor and market leader in headless commerce. It‘s commerce solution is used by over 200 companies including AT&T, Express, LEGO, Target and Volkswagen. 2019 commercetools completed a 145M USD funding round with Insight Partners.
